Ayurveda (eye-yer-vay-duh)

In the ancient Vedic Sanskrit, Ayur, meaning “life”, and Veda, meaning “knowledge”, come together as Ayurveda – “the science of life” or “the knowledge of living”. The oldest continually practiced medical system in history, Ayurveda encompasses life – mind, body and spirit - focusing on the prevention of disease and the body’s natural ability to cure. Prevention starts with a lifestyle that is balanced and in harmony with natural cycles.  When ones’ physical existence is in harmony with nature, the emotional and spiritual bodies reflect this harmony.

Ayurveda recognizes the uniqueness of each individual and honors the many factors that combine to determine who we are. The Ayurvedic path to wellness is customized to suit the specific mind-body type (Prakruti) and unique set of circumstances of each client. On the path to wellness, clients are active participants, become ever-increasingly self-aware and empowered by the knowledge that healing starts within.

Ayurvedic Consultations
The consultation process is crucial to understanding your constitution, how it relates to your tendencies of imbalance, and how we can most effectively create an individualized treatment program to address your concerns and assist you on your journey back to optimal health and well-being. Ayurveda is not just about healing present imbalances, but about understanding our unique nature. This knowledge allows us to live in the most harmonious way with our environment, thereby preventing disease and giving us the ability to experience life in its fullest.

Initial Consultations
The 2 hour initial consultation addresses your entire health history as well as your primary health care concerns. Through Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis, tongue analysis, and an in-depth evaluation of your health and lifestyle practices we gain an understanding of your complete state of health and the root cause of any imbalances.

Report of Findings
At the report of findings visit we discuss your Prakruti (constitution) and Vikruti (tendencies of imbalance). A customized treatment program will be designed for you. This path to wellness utilizes many different healing modalities. These may include:

  • Dietary recommendations
  • Custom-made herbal formulas
  • Aromatherapy
  • Sound therapy (mantra/music)
  • Color therapy
  • Customized Ayurvedic body therapies
  • Pancha Karma
  • Specific yoga asanas
  • Breath therapy (pranayama)
  • Meditation/Prayer

Follow-up Consultations
The follow-up consultations will occur as needed. At these visits we will continue to implement your treatment program, check in on your symptoms and progress, monitor and make adjustments to the plan, and continue to educate and support you on your journey.

PANCHA KARMA
The most powerful form of Ayurvedic healing, Pancha Karma, is a personalized combination of traditional Ayurvedic therapies. Modern life, with its environmental pollutants, frenetic pace and resultant stress weakens our constitution, making us vulnerable to disease and distress. In the hands of a skilled practitioner Pancha Karma can return us to our natural state of health, happiness, and well-being by cleansing the deep tissues and restoring balance to our physical and mental systems while releasing deeply held emotional tensions. Destructive patterns and their negative effects can be reversed and sustained by lifestyle changes recommended by a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist. Pancha Karma treatments have a profound effect. They relax the body and the mind, clear the circulation channels allowing for the free flow of energy, and aid the body in the elimination of excess dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) on all levels.

At the Conscious Living Rejuvenation Center we offer 5 to 14 day Pancha Karma cleanses. Each begins with a complete Ayurvedic consultation to determine the optimal program for you. A program will then be designed and individualized to meet your specific needs.

Pancha Karma begins with preparatory techniques, called “Purva Karma”. Purva Karma gently prepares the body for the cleansing and detoxifying actions of Pradhan Karma, the main actions of Pancha Karma, by loosening toxins and guiding them to the digestive system. After Pradhan Karma eliminates the ama (toxins) from the body Ayurveda implements Praschat Karma, or Rasayana therapies, for the rejuvenation of the body, mind and spirit.

Purva Karma can last 3 to 28 days. To properly prepare the body for the elimination of ama (toxins) we recommend a light mono-diet of kitcheree, internal and external oleation, and internal and external fomentation. The daily intake of medicated ghee, self-abhyanga (massage), increasing agni (digestive fire) through taking dipanas (digestive stimulants), and taking warm showers or baths can all be done from the comfort of your home with the support and guidance of a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist.

Pancha Karma translates to “five actions”. These traditional deeply purifying and detoxifying procedures are:

  • Vamana - cleansing of the stomach and esophagus
  • Virechana - cleansing of the small intestine
  • Basti - cleansing of the colon and large intestine
  • Nasya - cleansing of the nasal and sinus passages
  • Rakta Moksha - cleansing of the blood

These therapies make up the heart of Pancha Karma, Pradhan Karma, and are the main techniques for elimination of ama. They are employed based upon your Vikruti (imbalance) along with the more nourishing body therapies listed below.  Pradhan Karma is fully supervised and can last 5 to 14 days at the Conscious Living Rejuvenation Center.

The final aspect of Pancha Karma, Praschat Karma, works to strengthen the system after the deeply purifying procedures.  We work to rebuild the strength of the digestive system through the slow introduction of dosha-specific foods and dipanas.  Once the agni is strong again, rasayanas (rejuvenative herbs) are integrated to strengthen the body and mind. Taking place at home, with the support of your Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist, Praschat Karma is closely monitored over the course of one month to insure optimal health is restored.

Following a Pancha Karma treatment one can experience a deep relaxation, calm and clarity as though floating, effortlessly, on a deep blue sea of infinite tranquility and bliss. In this state of deep relaxation healing is happening in every cell of our Being and on every level of our existence.

Abhyanga (ah-bee-ang-ah)
The Mother of all massage, Abhyanga is a primary healing tool of Ayurveda. This choreographed, brisk, whole body massage nourishes the skin and lubricates the joint and muscle tissue while balancing the subtle energies of the body. While experiencing Abhyanga one luxuriates in the lavish use of warm herbal oils specifically blended for the special needs of the individual. This treatment stimulates both arterial and lymphatic circulation, moves stagnant toxins from the tissues for elimination and stimulates the internal healing system of the body. Historically, Abhyanga has been used to protect the body from stress and extend lifespan. The rhythmic, relaxing movements of the massage stimulate Prana, the vital life-force of the body/mind.

Shirodhara (sheer-oh-dah-rah)
In this profound treatment, warm, dosha-specific herbalized oils continuously stream over the Ajna Chakra (third eye), producing a state of deep relaxation while revitalizing the central nervous system. This transcendent experience helps to bring harmony to an array of emotional imbalances, including worry, anxiety, overwhelm, fear, depression, and stress. Shirodhara can also strengthen the sensory organs, dispel insomnia, and synchronize the brain waves, bringing about a blissful state of calm and happiness.

Nasya
Truly a beautiful treatment, nasya begins with a soothing warm oil massage of the face, neck and shoulders. This divinely relaxing experience is followed with facial heat treatment to open the pores and dilate the sinus pathways. The application of oil and heat ready the body for the nasal administration of dosha-specific herbalized oils. Being both tonifying and purifying based upon the herbs and oils utilized, this procedure is considered one of the best forms of medicine to address any disease from the neck up. Nasya is especially indicated for allergies, dry or inflamed sinuses, congestion, hearing loss, tinnitus, sinusitis, neck pain, insomnia, convulsions, hoarseness, migraines, dizziness, nervousness, anxiety, worry, fear, emptiness, negativity, and the inability to express oneself. Nasya therapy clarifies the mind and consciousness by increasing our ability to absorb Prana, or life energy, and elevates the spirit.

Anuvasana Basti
This Ayurvedic herbal oil enema is generally part of a Pancha Karma but also functions as a stand-alone therapy. It is deeply nourishing to the membranes of the colon and large intestine, as well as to the nervous system and bones. From an Ayurvedic perspective the health of the colon is directly related to the health of the bones, so this procedure is beneficial for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and osteopenia. Anuvasana Basti is an especially powerful preventative treatment for people of Vata nature and tonifying for excess Vata dosha.

Swedana (sway-dah-nah)
This exquisite herbal steam treatment envelops the body in steam infused with healing herbs. The therapeutic steam penetrates and cleanses deeply while the head remains cool. Swedana removes deep-seated toxins and clears the channels of the body.

Bliss Therapy
This heavenly combination of treatments begins with an Abhyanga massage, flows gracefully into a Shirodhara and culminates in a Swedana. These three therapies can be part of a greater Pancha Karma program, or stand-alone. The Bliss Therapy is a perfect addition to your seasonal cleanse, supporting the cleansing process by creating an optimal environment for deep healing to occur. Treat yourself to this journey deep within and relish in nurturing and nourishing your entire being.

Marma Chikitsa
Marma Points are vital energy centers located along the subtle energy channels of the body that relate to specific organs, systems and tissues. The Ayurvedic practice of Marma Point Therapy uses light touch massage, direct pressure, pranic healing and herbal & essential oil application to direct life-force through these centers. This ancient technique releases stuck energy and restores balanced flow, harmonizing your physical and subtle energy bodies.
